So the leading '/' of file names should be removed. The compiler loads the symbol addresses with the "larl" instruction. The populate_rootfs() function can then use the start marker of the .init.ramfs section and the value of __initramfs_size for loading the initramfs. Because the start marker and size is sufficient, the __initramfs_end symbol is no longer needed and is removed. For the read*() accessors, a rmb() is introduced after the I/O to avoid speculative loads where the driver polls for a DMA transfer ready bit. I'd missed updating the gate_vma handling in __get_user_pages(): that happens to use vm_normal_page() (nowadays failing on the zero page), yet reported success even when it failed to get a page - boom when access_process_vm() tried to copy that to its intermediate buffer. Fix this, resisting cleanups: in particular, leave it for now reporting success when not asked to get any pages - very probably safe to change, but let's not risk it without testing exposure. Why did ia64 crash with 16kB pages, but succeed with 64kB pages? Because setup_gate() pads each 64kB of its gate area with zero pages. The second pass of the etr_work_fn will reset the eacr.es bit but will leave the clock_sync_word intact. Fix this race by moving the reset of the eacr.es bit into the switch-to-local and sync-check functions and by checking the eacr.es bit as well to decide if the clock needs to be synced.
