| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, the 'MODULES' symbol is hard-coded to be the default symbol that enables/disables tristates, if no other symbol was declared with 'option modules'. While this used to be needed for the Linux kernel, we now have an explicit 'option modules' attached to the 'MODULES' symbol (since cset 11097a036), so we no longer need to special-case it in the kconfig code. Furthermore, kconfig is extensively used out of the Linux kernel, and other projects may have another meaning for a symbol named 'MODULES'. This patch changes the way we enable/disable tristates: if a symbol was found with 'option modules' attached to it, then that symbol controls enabling tristates. For example, if no symbol is defined to enable tristates, then kconfig looks up for a symbol named 'MODULES', and forces the 'modules' option onto that symbol. This causes problems as such: - since MODULES is special-cased, reading the configuration with KCONFIG_ALLCONFIG set will forcibly set MODULES to be 'valid' (ie. it has a valid value), when no such value was previously set. So MODULES defaults to 'n' unless it is present in KCONFIG_ALLCONFIG - other third-party projects may decide that 'MODULES' plays a different role for them This has been exposed by cset #cfa98f2e: kconfig: do not override symbols already set and reported by Stephen in: http://marc.info/?l=linux-next&m=137592137915234&w=2 As suggested by Sam, we explicitly define the MODULES symbol to be the tristate-enabler. Then the second silentoldconfig prints the warning. The warning in this case is a spurious warning, which happens at the time kconfig tries to detect symbols that have changed, to touch the empty header files in include/config used for dependency-tracking by make. Silence the warning when we read the old auto.conf file, since it is perfectly legit that a symbol changed type since the previous call. But the SLUB code is relatively lockless, and the spin_locks there are raw_spin_locks (not converted to mutexes), thus I believe this bug can happen in mainline without -rt features. The -rt patch is just good at triggering mainline bugs ;-) Anyway, looking at where this crashed, it seems that the page variable can be NULL when passed to the node_match() function (which does not check if it is NULL). When this happens we get the above panic. As page is only used in slab_alloc() to check if the node matches, if it's NULL I'm assuming that we can say it doesn't and call the __slab_alloc() code. Is this a correct assumption? If memory is tight and slob fails to allocate with slob_alloc() or slob_new_pages() it still calls the ctor() method with a NULL pointer. Another issue is that the documentation for kmalloc_node() refers to kcalloc()'s documentation to describe its 'flags' parameter, while kcalloc() refered to kmalloc()'s documentation, which doesn't exist! This patch is a proposed fix for this. It also removes the documentation for kmalloc() in include/linux/slob_def.h which isn't included to generate the documentation anyway. This way, kmalloc() is described in only one place. This leads to an unbootable system (kernel panic at initializing SLAB) if one of kmalloc_caches[26...PAGE_SHIFT+MAX_ORDER-1] is not NULL. Fix this by making sure that init_lock_keys() does not dereference beyond kmalloc_caches[26] arrays. These helpers cache the result of cmpxchg() and read the initial value of head->first before the main loop. I do not think this makes sense. In the likely case cmpxchg() succeeds, otherwise it doesn't hurt to reload head->first. I think it would be better to simplify the code and simply read ->first before cmpxchg().
