* ktime: Cleanup ktime_set() usageThomas Gleixner2016-12-251-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | ktime_set(S,N) was required for the timespec storage type and is still useful for situations where a Seconds and Nanoseconds part of a time value needs to be converted. For anything where the Seconds argument is 0, this is pointless and can be replaced with a simple assignment. * powerpc/oprofile: reduce mmap_sem hold for exe_fileDavidlohr Bueso2015-04-171-5/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In the future mm->exe_file will be done without mmap_sem serialization, thus isolate and reorganize the related code to make the transition easier. Good users will, make use of the more standard get_mm_exe_file(), requiring only holding the mmap_sem to read the value, and relying on reference counting to make sure that the exe file won't dissappear underneath us while getting the dcookie. * mm: use mm->exe_file instead of first VM_EXECUTABLE vma->vm_fileKonstantin Khlebnikov2012-10-091-11/+4Star
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some security modules and oprofile still uses VM_EXECUTABLE for retrieving a task's executable file. After this patch they will use mm->exe_file directly. mm->exe_file is protected with mm->mmap_sem, so locking stays the same. * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-302-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. | * powerpc/oprofile: IBM CELL: add SPU event profiling supportCarl Love2009-01-082-3/+38
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch adds the SPU event based profiling funcitonality for the IBM Cell processor. Previously, the CELL OProfile kernel code supported PPU event, PPU cycle profiling and SPU cycle profiling. The addition of SPU event profiling allows the users to identify where in their SPU code various SPU evnets are occuring. This should help users further identify issues with their code. Note, SPU profiling has some limitations due to HW constraints. Only one event at a time can be used for profiling and SPU event profiling must be time sliced across all of the SPUs in a node. The patch adds a new arch specific file to the OProfile file system. The file has bit 0 set to indicate that the kernel supports SPU event profiling. The user tool must check this file/bit to make sure the kernel supports SPU event profiling before trying to do SPU event profiling. The user tool check is part of the user tool patch for SPU event profiling. Signed-off-by: Carl Love <carll@us.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Robert Richter <robert.richter@amd.com>

* | shrink struct dentryNick Piggin2009-01-011-1/+1
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | struct dentry is one of the most critical structures in the kernel. So it's sad to see it going neglected. With CONFIG_PROFILING turned on (which is probably the common case at least for distros and kernel developers), sizeof(struct dcache) == 208 here (64-bit). This gives 19 objects per slab. I packed d_mounted into a hole, and took another 4 bytes off the inline name length to take the padding out from the end of the structure. This shinks it to 200 bytes. I could have gone the other way and increased the length to 40, but I'm aiming for a magic number, read on... I then got rid of the d_cookie pointer. This shrinks it to 192 bytes. Rant: why was this ever a good idea? The cookie system should increase its hash size or use a tree or something if lookups are a problem. Also the "fast dcookie lookups" in oprofile should be moved into the dcookie code -- how can oprofile possibly care about the dcookie_mutex? It gets dropped after get_dcookie() returns so it can't be providing any sort of protection. At 192 bytes, 21 objects fit into a 4K page, saving about 3MB on my system with ~140 000 entries allocated. 192 is also a multiple of 64, so we get nice cacheline alignment on 64 and 32 byte line systems -- any given dentry will now require 3 cachelines to touch all fields wheras previously it would require 4. I know the inline name size was chosen quite carefully, however with the reduction in cacheline footprint, it should actually be just about as fast to do a name lookup for a 36 character name as it was before the patch (and faster for other sizes). The memory footprint savings for names which are <= 32 or > 36 bytes long should more than make up for the memory cost for 33-36 byte names. Performance is a feature... * | | powerpc/oprofile: Fix mutex locking for cell spu-oprofileCarl Love2008-10-213-28/+225
| |/ |/| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The issue is the SPU code is not holding the kernel mutex lock while adding samples to the kernel buffer. This patch creates per SPU buffers to hold the data. Data is added to the buffers from in interrupt context. The data is periodically pushed to the kernel buffer via a new Oprofile function oprofile_put_buff(). The oprofile_put_buff() function is called via a work queue enabling the funtion to acquire the mutex lock. The existing user controls for adjusting the per CPU buffer size is used to control the size of the per SPU buffers. Similarly, overflows of the SPU buffers are reported by incrementing the per CPU buffer stats. This eliminates the need to have architecture specific controls for the per SPU buffers which is not acceptable to the OProfile user tool maintainer. The export of the oprofile add_event_entry() is removed as it is no longer needed given this patch. Note, this patch has not addressed the issue of indexing arrays by the spu number. This still needs to be fixed as the spu numbering is not guarenteed to be 0 to max_num_spus-1. * [CELL] oprofile: add support to OProfile for profiling CELL BE SPUsBob Nelson2007-07-204-0/+1089
From: Maynard Johnson <mpjohn@us.ibm.com> This patch updates the existing arch/powerpc/oprofile/op_model_cell.c to add in the SPU profiling capabilities. In addition, a 'cell' subdirectory was added to arch/powerpc/oprofile to hold Cell-specific SPU profiling code. Exports spu_set_profile_private_kref and spu_get_profile_private_kref which are used by OProfile to store private profile information in spufs data structures. Also incorporated several fixes from other patches (rrn). Check pointer returned from kzalloc. Eliminated unnecessary cast. Better error handling and cleanup in the related area. 64-bit unsigned long parameter was being demoted to 32-bit unsigned int and eventually promoted back to unsigned long.
