* mtd: rawnand: micron: handle on-die "ECC-off" devices correctlyMarco Felsch2019-08-061-3/+11

Some devices are not supposed to support on-die ECC but experience shows that internal ECC machinery can actually be enabled through the "SET FEATURE (EFh)" command, even if a read of the "READ ID Parameter Tables" returns that it is not. Currently, the driver checks the "READ ID Parameter" field directly after having enabled the feature. If the check fails it returns immediately but leaves the ECC on. When using buggy chips like MT29F2G08ABAGA and MT29F2G08ABBGA, all future read/program cycles will go through the on-die ECC, confusing the host controller which is supposed to be the one handling correction. To address this in a common way we need to turn off the on-die ECC directly after reading the "READ ID Parameter" and before checking the "ECC status". At present, the flow of calculating AC timing of read/write cycle in SDR mode is that: At first, calculate high hold time which is valid for both read and write cycle using the max value between tREH_min and tWH_min. Secondly, calculate WE# pulse width using tWP_min. Thridly, calculate RE# pulse width using the bigger one between tREA_max and tRP_min. But NAND SPEC shows that Controller should also meet write/read cycle time. That is write cycle time should be more than tWC_min and read cycle should be more than tRC_min. Obviously, we do not achieve that now. This patch corrects the low level time calculation to meet minimum read/write cycle time required. After getting the high hold time, WE# low level time will be promised to meet tWP_min and tWC_min requirement, and RE# low level time will be promised to meet tREA_max, tRP_min and tRC_min requirement. It was observed that reads crossing 4K address boundary are failing. This limitation is mentioned in Intel documents: Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family Platform Controller Hub (PCH) Datasheet: "5.26.3 Flash Access Program Register Access: * Program Register Accesses are not allowed to cross a 4 KB boundary..." Enhanced Serial Peripheral Interface (eSPI) Interface Base Specification (for Client and Server Platforms): "5.1.4 Address For other memory transactions, the address may start or end at any byte boundary. However, the address and payload length combination must not cross the naturally aligned address boundary of the corresponding Maximum Payload Size. It must not cross a 4 KB address boundary." Avoid this by splitting an operation crossing the boundary into two operations. Unfortunately, also the erratas may be shared. In case of the documented erratas and the workarounds, you can also apply the workaround solution of one device on the other one. This have been reported, but I’m afraid that there are not an estimated date for updating the Errata documents. Please accept our apologies for any inconveniences this may cause." This patch did not take the 0 bytes partition case into account which can happen when the defined partition is outside the flash device memory range. Fix that by setting the partition erasesize to the parent erasesize. This causes the sg_init_table of clear_bam_transaction() in the driver's qcom_nandc_block_bad() to memset much more than what was initially allocated by alloc_bam_transaction(). This patch restores the old behavior by reallocating the shared bam transaction alloc_bam_transaction() after the chip was identified, but before mtd_device_parse_register() (which is an alias for mtd_device_register() - see panic) gets called. This fixes the corruption and the driver is working again. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | commit cafb56dd741e61c99709bcd2b193a9a1d36def3b upstream. marvell_nfc_wait_op() waits for completion during 'timeout_ms' milliseconds before throwing an error. While the logic is fine, the value of 'timeout_ms' is given by the core and actually correspond to the maximum time the NAND chip will take to complete the operation. Assuming there is no overhead in the propagation of the interrupt signal to the the NAND controller (through the Ready/Busy line), this delay does not take into account the latency of the operating system. For instance, for a page write, the delay given by the core is rounded up to 1ms. Hence, when the machine is over loaded, there is chances that this timeout will be reached. There are two ways to solve this issue that are not incompatible: 1/ Enlarge the timeout value (if so, how much?). 2/ Check after the waiting method if we did not miss any interrupt because of the OS latency (an interrupt is still pending). In this case, we assume the operation exited successfully. We choose the second approach that is a must in all cases, with the possibility to also modify the timeout value to be, e.g. at least 1 second in all cases. I ran into a link-time error with the atmel-quadspi driver on the EBSA110 platform: drivers/mtd/built-in.o: In function `atmel_qspi_run_command': :(.text+0x1ee3c): undefined reference to `_memcpy_toio' :(.text+0x1ee48): undefined reference to `_memcpy_fromio' The problem is that _memcpy_toio/_memcpy_fromio are not available on that platform, and we have to prevent building the driver there. In case we want to backport this to older kernels: between linux-4.8 and linux-4.20, the Kconfig entry was in drivers/mtd/spi-nor/Kconfig but had the same problem. I noticed during the creation of another bugfix that the BCH_CONST_PARAMS option that is set by DOCG3 breaks setting variable parameters for any other users of the BCH library code. The only other user we have today is the MTD_NAND software BCH implementation (most flash controllers use hardware BCH these days and are not affected). I considered removing BCH_CONST_PARAMS entirely because of the inherent conflict, but according to the description in lib/bch.c there is a significant performance benefit in keeping it. To avoid the immediate problem of the conflict between MTD_NAND_BCH and DOCG3, this only sets the constant parameters if MTD_NAND_BCH is disabled, which should fix the problem for all cases that are affected. This should also work for all stable kernels. Note that there is only one machine that actually seems to use the DOCG3 driver (arch/arm/mach-pxa/mioa701.c), so most users should have the driver disabled, but it almost certainly shows up if we wanted to test random kernels on machines that use software BCH in MTD. In many cases, the first byte in OOB is used for BBM, but the location actually depends on chip vendors. The NAND controller should preserve the precious BBM to keep track of bad blocks. In Denali IP, the SPARE_AREA_SKIP_BYTES register is used to specify the number of bytes to skip from the start of OOB. The ECC engine will automatically skip the specified number of bytes when it gets access to OOB area. The same value for SPARE_AREA_SKIP_BYTES should be used between firmware and the operating system if you intend to use the NAND device across the control hand-off. In fact, the current denali.c code expects firmware to have already set the SPARE_AREA_SKIP_BYTES register, then reads the value out. If no firmware (or bootloader) has initialized the controller, the register value is zero, which is the default after power-on-reset. In other words, the Linux driver cannot initialize the controller by itself. Some possible solutions are: [1] Add a DT property to specify the skipped bytes in OOB [2] Associate the preferred value with compatible [3] Hard-code the default value in the driver My first attempt was [1], but in the review process, [3] was suggested as a counter-implementation. Other events might trigger an interrupt as well if enabled, but should not end-up with a complete() call. For this purpose, the code was checking if the other bits were set, in this case complete() was not called. This is wrong as two events might happen in a very tight time-frame and if the NDSR status read reports two bits set (eg. RDY(0) and RDDREQ) at the same time, complete() was not called. This logic would lead to timeouts in marvell_nfc_wait_op() and has been observed on PXA boards (NFCv1) in the Hamming write path. A of_node_put() was a bit below in the code, to balance the of_get_child_by_name(). However, despite its name, mtd_get_of_node() does not take a reference on the OF node. It is a simple helper hiding some pointer logic to retrieve the OF node related to an MTD device. It is a special usage for some drivers such as docg4, but actually the Denali driver may pass maxchips=0 to nand_scan() when the driver is enabled but no NAND chip is found on the board for some reasons. If nand_scan_with_ids() is called with maxchips=0, nand_scan_ident() is skipped, then nand_set_defaults() is skipped as well. Thus, the driver must set chip->controller beforehand. Otherwise, nand_attach() causes NULL pointer dereference. In fact, the Denali controller knows the number of connected chips before calling nand_scan_ident(); if DEVICE_RESET fails, there is no chip in that chip select. Then, denali_reset_banks() sets the maxchips to the number of detected chips. If no chip is found, maxchips is zero. In this case, there is no point for calling nand_scan() because we know it will fail for sure. Let's make the probe function fail immediately. Quick summary of the problem: Some systems (e.g., boot ROM or bootloader) assume that they can read initial boot code from their SPI flash using 3-byte addressing. If the flash is left in 4-byte mode after reset, these systems won't boot. The above patch provided a shutdown/remove hook to attempt to reset the addressing mode before we reboot. Notably, this patch misses out on huge classes of unexpected reboots (e.g., crashes, watchdog resets). Unfortunately, it is essentially impossible to solve this problem 100%: if your system doesn't know how to reset the SPI flash to power-on defaults at initialization time, no amount of software can really rescue you -- there will always be a chance of some unexpected reset that leaves your flash in an addressing mode that your boot sequence didn't expect. While it is not directly harmful to perform hacks like the aforementioned commit on all 4-byte addressing flash, a properly-designed system should not need the hack -- and in fact, providing this hack may mask the fact that a given system is indeed broken. So this patch attempts to apply this unsound hack more narrowly, providing a strong suggestion to developers and system designers that this is truly a hack. With luck, system designers can catch their errors early on in their development cycle, rather than applying this hack long term. But apparently enough systems are out in the wild that we still have to provide this hack. Document a new device tree property to denote systems that do not have a proper hardware (or software) reset mechanism, and apply the hack (with a loud warning) only in this case.
